Helena Marques Memorial

Last week, we lost a colleague and a former INFER Board Member. Helena Marques was a professor at the Department of Applied Economics at the University of the Balearic Islands (Spain).

Helena had a Bachelor' degree in Economics from the University of Coimbra - Portugal (1997), a Master in Economics from the University of Leuven - Belgium (1998), and a PhD in Economics from the University of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, in the United Kingdom (2004).

Her research work focused on international trade and exchange rate regimes, globalization, labor market and heterogeneous agents, and the economic effects of insularity. In all these areas, she published numerous articles in prestigious peer-reviewed international journals.

She coordinated the activities of the INFER Working Group "International Economics" between 2006 and 2009. Helena was an active INFER Board Member (2007-2009) : she contributed a lot to the internationalization of our network and managed greatly the INFER Workshop Committee.

We will miss the discussions, her sense of initiative and her kindness. Our condolences go to her family.

The INFER Board

I met Helena Marques back in 2004 when I moved to Loughborough University. It was Helena who introduced me to INFER and took me to my first ever INFER workshop. Helena was an active member of the network then, and, also, joined the board.

When I became Chair and re-structured the board, Helena turned out to be an excellent team player. She was responsible for the workshop committee and promoted INFER partcularly in Southern Europe. After all her home country was Portugal. When we all moved away from Loughboroug University, Helena found a new home in Mallorca where she passed away last week.

It was a pleasure and honour working with Helena and she will be missed.

May Helena rest in peace.
